But What is Montessori?
Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educational theorist in the early twentieth century whose observations of children revolutionized the field of early childhood education. Her Montessori Method is based on the idea that schooling should accommodate the natural developmental path of children - and that they should not have to conform to standards that deviate from their nature. A Montessori classroom is characterized by its multi-age student demographics, which allows for more student leadership and opportunities for varied social relationships. Specially trained teachers carefully observe each child’s development to prepare an environment which is specifically responsive to the needs of all students. In a carefully prepared environment rich in high quality materials and supported by these expert teachers, the curriculum can closely follow the interests and rhythms of the individual and unique child.
Maria Montessori believed that children were intrinsically good, peaceful, and motivated to learn. She felt that children, and the impression that experiences would leave them with, were the key to our world's future. Her approach to education was grounded in this philosophy. We share these values and wish to harness them within the school environment, collaborating with students and their families in creating a community that shares these beliefs.
